Fluoride is one of the most toxic substances known to man, yet based on its inclusion in virtually every brand of toothpaste, theAmerican Dental Association believes it’s okay to use fluoride for preventative dental care. In 2002, nearly 90% of the U.S. population was supplied water via public water systems, and around 67% of that number received fluoridated water. Of course, the manufacturer would stand to profit from this advice as they subtly suggest “Nursery® can be ideal for mixing with baby formulas”. To support their position, the company misconstrues “recommendations” from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the FDA that chemically synthesized formula is just as good as real breastmilk. In fact, DS Waters’ “research” was obviously obtained from the website of a doctor whose tradition-oriented childcare theories have been all but invalidated, misguided, and just plain harmful to your child’s development!

In a medical laboratory, technicians can measure blood levels for the amount of calcium and potassium. Both hypocalcemia (too little calcium) and hyperkalemia (too much potassium) can indicate that a patient has been exposed to an excess amount of fluoride.

You may have heard of The Million Women Study, an Oxford University-based research effort that is making an attempt to come to a final decision on whether hormone replacement therapy is helping women through some of the more uncomfortable symptoms of menopause, or, in fact, giving them cancer. Beyond answering these questions, The Million Women Study is quickly becoming what many experts are calling a “blueprint for women’s health.”

In a recent article from The Guardian, “A million women can’t be wrong,” it was announced that the study had found that even a small amount of all types of wine can lead to increases in a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer later in life.

These are, indeed, shocking findings, considering that red wine has often been touted as one of the best ways to prevent cardiovascular diseases.

The Oxford study also looked at a variety of controversial women’s health issues, including birth control medication, hormone replacement therapy, diet, pregnancy, childbearing, as well as menopause. The study, unlike many other small-scale undertakings, involves extremely reliable information, due to the sheer size of the number of women surveyed.

The Link Between Wine & Breast Cancer

While many people look forward to winding down from the daily grind with a glass of red or white wine, the Oxford study clearly indicates that in a study of over one million women, there is a clear link between even moderate amounts of wine and breast cancer.

Researchers feel that there may be a relationship between the behavior of alcohol on hormone levels in the body, especially estrogen. And as estrogen is such a key player in the regular reproductive cycle, and increased levels of estrogen have been clearly linked to breast cancer, some studies are looking into the possibility that alcohol may increase estrogen levels in women. The same study also suggests that the intake of alcohol may affect other biological systems related to increased cancer in women.

An example of this holistic understanding is that of the liver. It has been found that alcohol inhibits the liver from functioning at optimal levels. If the liver, which is responsible for ridding the body of toxins, is unable to function properly, our body may get overloaded with the carcinogens that the liver was unable to expel. Unfortunately for all of you wine-lovers out there, alcohol may also be acting as a co-carcinogen, meaning it may aid cancerous cells in their growth patterns.

The report also looked into many variables that the scientific community has not taken into consideration in regard to women and cancer. The Million Women Study questions participants on everything from whether they use butter or olive oil in their cooking, if they regularly listen to music or paint, and even variables such as stress levels and happiness indicators.

Suggested Ways to Reduce Your Risk

Although many of the findings from The Million Women Study are still emerging, the main ways for women to reduce their risks of developing cancer and heart disease are reported from the study as follows:

  • Avoid Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT): The Million Women Study found that use of the normal combined form of estrogen and progesterone HRT doubled women’s risk of cancer. The good news is that the increased risk goes away once women stop taking HRT.
  • Stop Smoking: Smoking increases cancer risk in women by 32 percent. The great news is that the study found that, “If you give up smoking, within five years your risk of lung cancer has halved,” says Professor Valerie Beral, director of Oxford University’s cancer epidemiology unit.
  • Maintain a Healthy Weight: This study found that being overweight, as well as underweight, increases risks. They recommend a body mass index (BMI) of 24.
  • Stop Drinking Alcohol: Even one glass of any alcoholic beverage can increase your likelihood for breast cancer. The good news from the study states that, “Once you stop drinking, your increased cancer risk starts to melt away.”
  • Exercise: It will help you to significantly decrease you risk for heart disease.
  • Breast-feed: Using the breasts to feed offspring has been shown to reduce the chances of breast cancer. Having children was also shown to help protect women against breast cancer.

I also recommend regular body cleansing to reduce the risk of developing breast cancer and I highly suggest avoiding mammograms. Use thermography as a safe breast cancer screening device.

The three essentials for maintaining life are air, water and food. Because the air is all about us and we do not have to make a special effort to get it, very few realize the importance of air in the scheme of life.

Air is the most immediately necessary of all the life maintainers. We can go without food two or three months; we can live without water several days; but if we are deprived of air for five or six minutes, life ends.

Very few die from acute deprivation of air, but multitudes perish every year whose departure is partly due to chronic air starvation. Let us see why air, with its life-giving oxygen, is so important.

We might say that life is a fire, and that the human body is burning at all times, and that if the burning stops life ceases. This is a literal fact, and not an exaggeration. The fire is different from what comes to mind when we usually think of fire with flames, gases and smoke. In the physical fire there is no flame, but it is a form of oxidation. And this oxidation must go on. Fats, proteins, and a special form of sugar must be burned to keep up the physical energy and the necessary heat.

Let this burning slow down, and the body grows chilly, and the individual becomes languid. Let the slowing process go further and the chilliness and weakness increase so that the individual has very little use of body and mind; let it proceed further and we have physical death.

We have to supply the materials to be burned, (sweets, fats, and starches principally) in our food. But the material to keep up the fire comes from the air. It is like burning coal in a stove. The coal is carbon which unites with the oxygen, liberating energy which we use for heating purposes. If the air is shut out entirely (which can not be done in a commercial stove) the fire dies, just as an individual dies when the air is shut out of his lungs.

Air enters the lungs, and through hundreds of square feet of membranous lung surface it enters the blood stream, for the essential of the lungs is a thin membrane with blood on one side and air on the other. The oxygen filters through this thin membrane, unites with a compound in the red blood corpuscles, and forms oxy-hemoglobin. As such it is carried to all parts of the body, and the different tissues take what they need of it, combustion ensues, and as a result the body is heated and energized; also, as a result of combustion water and waste are formed. The blood stream can take care of the water, but the waste has to be carried away. The carbonic acid gas must be thrown out of the body regularly, or else there is chilliness and clamminess—decrease of vigor and health. Fortunately, the waste elimination is automatic if we breathe deeply, for the blood carries this poisonous gas back to the lungs, where it escapes outward while the oxygen enters the blood stream.

Fresh air rejuvenates, and aids in maintaining the individual young, strong, and healthy. It paints the cheeks with color that the drug store products can not rival in delicacy and beauty. And the air is free. But not one per-son in twenty takes advantage of this blessing, which we can have in abundance without expenediture of time or effort.

Most adults, especially the women, breathe with only the upper part of the lungs. Watch a baby breathing and learn the correct way. In order to do this it is necessary to dress correctly, and one item in correct dressing is to avoid tightly constricting bands or garments about the waist. Men should not wear tight belts. Women should avoid tight corsets. If they feel that they must support the breasts, garments can be made or purchased for that purpose.

Acquire correct breathing habits. Let the waist line be free; then throw the shoulders back, close the mouth and inhale slowly and fully through the nose. Pay no attention to the chest while doing this. Fill the lungs, as you should, and the chest will of itself expand to the sides and forward, and the abdomen will rise. After filling the lungs, slowly exhale, and expel the air partly through the mouth, if you wish. Repeat this a dozen or more times. It is well to take this breathing exercise three times daily when in the open air, until the habit of deep breathing is firmly established. This can be done while walking or driving in the open air. Or it can be done before an open window, or while standing still, if the individual has plenty of time. It helps to keep the in ternal organs clean, and cleanliness means health, and health means vigor and prolonged youth, which can be made the foundation of a successful life.

Every woman should have at least three inches of chest expansion, and a man should have an expansion of four inches or more. If the expansion is too small, practice deep breathing, and stretching, and the expansion will gradually increase.

Some say that the chest should be thrust forward and carried high. There is no objection to this except that it is very tiresome and consumes too much energy. Throw the shoulders back, get the habit of deep breathing, and the chest position will take care of itself. Pay no attention to the chest walls and the abdominal wall when breathing, for if you fill the lungs with air, these walls will take care of themselves. Also, there is no advantage in holding the breath. If it is overdone, as it sometimes is among those playing wind instruments, it may help to produce asthma.

But what are we going to do about that dangerous, deadly night air ? The truth is that the night air is as salubrious as the day air. No dangers lurk in it. It contains just as good oxygen as the day air. It is even more important that the air breathed at night be pure than during the daytime, for during the night the vital forces are slowed down, and less air is consumed. Night being the time of rest, relaxation, rejuvenation and rebuilding, it is necessary to have the best of air to get fine results.

Arrange to have air freely entering the bed-room both summer and winter. There is no need of having a draught blowing over the bed, nor is there any special advantage in it. Sensitive individuals are sometimes adversely affected by draughts, for they may cause congestion in different parts of the body, and one common form of congestion is a cold. If there is a strong wind, it is not necessary to open the windows as wide as on a quiet night.

Have free ventilation at night. Sleeping porches and tents are good, provided the sleeper stays warm and dry.

Arrange to keep warm in bed, also to be well supplied with fresh air. Get into a comfortable physical position. Refuse to take cares and worries to bed, and you will soon be enjoying restful sleep.

Great lung capacity is an indication of large vital capacity. Get the habit of filling the lungs with good air during the day, and have plenty of fresh air at night. A free supply of oxygen is necessary to keep the blood clean. Cleanliness is health.



Eye Lift (Blepharoplasty)

What is it?
An eyelift operation, or Blepharoplasty, is the removal of excess skin, saggy muscle and sometimes fat from the eyelids. It may be performed alone or as part of a face lift procedure.

The Operation
The surgery can be performed under local or general anaesthesia. The surgeon marks out the excess skin on the upper eyelid so that the final scar will tend to be hidden when the eye is open. On the lower eyelid, the scar is very close underneath the eyelashes and extends out onto a crease line. The type of surgery performed depends on the exact underlying problems. The surgery is frequently performed as a Day Case.

Any Alternatives
There are no surgical alternatives for Blepharoplasty.

Before the Operation
Pre-operative assessment by the surgeon is most important to achieve the best results. Assessment will indicate where the problem is. Sometimes the problem may be related to excess drooping of the eyebrows. This may need to be surgically corrected. The older one gets the more tissue tends to sag and some of the tissue on the eyelids may be related to laxity of the underlying ligaments as much as to the overlying skin. This may need to be corrected at the time of surgery. It is also very important to make sure that there is adequate tear production in the eye. Should this not be the case, 'dry eyes' can occur following surgery, which can lead to damage to the outer lining of the eyes. After - In Hospital
There will be stitches on the upper eyelid and just beneath the lashes of the lower eyelid. There may also be some paper tapes in order to support the stitches. Ice packs may be used over the eyes in order to decrease the amount of swelling and to keep the eyelids comfortable. It is best to sleep propped up for forty-eight hours following surgery as this is when most swelling tends to occur. The eye vision and blood pressure will be checked following surgery. Ointment may also be placed in the eyes to prevent them from drying out and becoming irritated.

After - At Home
As the surgery may be performed as a Day Case, you may be able to go home on the same day as the surgery. There is likely to be bruising or swelling for two to three weeks. This can be well hidden by sunglasses. It is also important to avoid heavy lifting or bending for two to three weeks following surgery. It is advisable to avoid any heavy activity or gym work for about one month after surgery. Sleeping propped up at nighttime tends to help reduce swelling. The stitches from around the eyes are usually removed between five and seven days following surgery.

Possible Complications
Swelling persists for some weeks after the surgery. Very occasionally serious complications can occur with eye lifts. It is very important to let the doctor know if pain is experienced beyond that which one would expect. This can be an indication of bleeding into the back of the eye. Occasionally wounds can get infected and lead to infection in and around the eye. Inadequate removal of the tissue can also lead to an unsatisfactory result. Drooping of the upper eyelid can also occur if the muscle that lifts the upper eyelid is damaged during the surgery. People who wear contact lenses may find that they are difficult to put in after the surgery.

Excess removal of fatty tissue can result in a hollow 'dead eye' appearance, which does not look nice. Excision of too much skin can lead to an 'open eye' appearance. This can be difficult to correct. Very very rarely loss of vision can occur.

General Advice
Following eyelid surgery it is important to avoid any activities that involve bending stooping or straining. It is also important to avoid situations where foreign material may get into the eyes.

Walking Around The Park


There are so many reasons to walk instead of driving. We have been very consistent walking around the park but sometimes things come up and if we don't get a chance to walk around the park we still manage to get our walk in. Instead of driving to the store (we have stores within walking distance from where we live) we walk to them. It is a fabulous way to get your walking in and you have just gotten your exercise for the day. My mom and I both have friends who live close-by. Sometimes we walk to their houses when we go to visit them. If we have did our routine walk for that day than we have just gotten some extra miles in. Besides, it also saves on gas too.


The number one reason I like walking so much is because it is so easy to do. Actually, there is really no set time when to do it. I can walk anytime and anywhere. I can't make any excuses not to do it. All you need is a good pair of gym shoes and that's about it. You don't need any equipment unless; you want to get a treadmill for the wintertime.


It's nice to get support if you are just starting out and to see that other people too are just as serious about walking as you are. I'm still learning and it's nice to continue to read all the benefits my body is getting when I walk. That's even more a motivator for me.

Walking Around The Park (Part2)

I had to start carrying a stick when we go walking because there are quite a few stray dogs running around the neighborhood. Luckily we haven't ran into any violent ones. Not long after we had gotten to the park this dog was following us and it wouldn't stop. There were some people cleaning up the park by cleaning out the garbage cans and the dog went over to them and my mom and I were able to lose him. Even though I had the stick I didn't want to hit him because he wasn't violent, but I was happy that he wasn't following us anymore. It can really ruin your walk when a strange dog is trailing you.


When we walk sometimes we walk different routes. These days it's not good for someone to know your walking pattern. So, we switch walking patterns. We don't walk the same way back as we do coming. That way it will be hard for someone to know when you will be coming or going a certain way. Also, there is a path way but it is hidden by trees we never walk through there because know one can see you from the road. These are just some precautions that we take when we are walking. It is better to be safe than sorry.


It helps too that we have gotten to know a few fellow walkers. Like us, they are regular walkers and we see them everyday. So, we are definitely not alone and that is a good thing.


Walking Around The Park (Part1)

My mom and I have been walking around the park for exercise. We leave out as soon as the sun comes up. I like that time of the day because there isn't many people out and it is very quiet. We walk to the park, around the park and than we walk home. It is a 3 mile walk but it doesn't seem that long. Once you walk it many times it seems as though the distance gets shorter. There are many other people who walk around the park too. We've come to know them because we see them everyday. They, too are serious about their walking. Many of our fellow walkers are elderly. They be moving though. It just goes to show you that you are never to old to start exercising. What counts the most is just getting started.

I have been walking at my mom's pace. I could really walk faster but I don't want to leave her behind. I think it's important for us to stay together. Her pace is picking up. We have gone from 1 hour to 40 minutes to 1 hour and 20 minutes.


We were still walking even in the 90 degree weather but we were blessed to get a couple of cool breezes along the way. The weather that we are experiencing now is just perfect walking weather. You can't get any weather better than this.
